Fremont Pathfinders Back-to-School Tips

Explore the Possibilities: Start the Year with Confidence!

At Fremont Elementary, we believe all students can thrive when they feel prepared, confident, and supported. Use these tips to help your child ease back into school routines and spark excitement for a year of learning, discovery, and growth.

📚 Refresh Academic Readiness

Start the year strong by weaving learning into summer days in fun and engaging ways.

  • Reignite Reading Habits

    • Set aside time each day for independent or family reading.

    • Create a cozy, quiet reading space at home.

    • Visit the local library to explore new books and set reading goals together.

    • Read aloud as a family to build fluency and vocabulary.

  • Build Math Confidence Through Everyday Activities

    • In the Kitchen: Let your child help measure, count, and calculate while baking or cooking.

    • At the Store: Have them compare prices, calculate discounts, or estimate totals.

    • Game Night: Play board games, card games, or puzzles that involve numbers, strategy, or logic.

    • Outdoor Play: Use sidewalk chalk to write math problems or count steps on a nature walk.
  • Practice Core Skills

    • Review high-frequency words, math facts, and writing strategies appropriate to your child’s grade level.

    • Use educational websites or apps for short, skill-based practice sessions

⏰ Ease Back Into Routines

Help your child feel confident and rested as they return to school.

  • Begin transitioning to a consistent bedtime and wake-up routine two weeks before school starts.

  • Practice your morning routine, including breakfast, getting dressed, and organizing backpacks.

  • Set expectations for after-school routines, including homework, play, and screen time

🚌 Talk About Transportation & Safety

Start the year with clarity and calm.

  • Review how your child will get to and from school, including who is responsible for pick-up and drop-off.

  • Practice walking the route or identifying the bus stop, if applicable.

  • Go over safety rules—look both ways, stay on sidewalks, and know who to go to for help.

  • Make sure your child has emergency contact information memorized or stored in their backpack

🎒 Kindergarten Jumpstart

Kindergarten is a big adventure! Help your child feel ready by practicing key foundational skills.

  • Practice writing their name, identifying letter names and sounds, and counting out loud.

  • Support independence by practicing how to zip jackets, fasten buttons/snaps, and use the restroom without assistance.

  • Strengthen fine motor skills through coloring, cutting, building, and drawing.

  • Read picture books about starting school and talk together about what to expect.

  • Practice carrying a backpack, opening a lunchbox, and eating lunch within a set time

👟 For Our Youngest Pathfinders

Foster independence and confidence with these everyday tasks:

  • Practice tying shoes or confidently using Velcro.

  • Have your child open and close snack bags, lunch containers, and water bottles on their own.

  • Encourage daily responsibility by having them help pack their backpack or lunch, choose their outfit, or clean up their play area.

Let’s work together to ensure every Fremont Pathfinder is ready to 'Explore the Possibilities' this school year!
