Entrance Age Requirements
Colorado Preschool Program
ENTRANCE AGE REQUIREMENTS: D11 Board Policy: JEB
Children who are three years old on or before October 1 of the school year in which they would like to enroll may be eligible to enter the Colorado Preschool Program in schools where this program is offered. Children who are eligible for Special Education Services may enter the Preschool Program on or after their third birthday.
Kindergarten
Children who are five years old on or before October 1 of the school year in which they would like to enroll may enter kindergarten. Younger students who do not meet the District's entrance age requirement for kindergarten may be accepted if transferring from another kindergarten program, if the principal or designee determines that placement of the student in kindergarten is appropriate. A child who is four years old on or before October 1 of the school year in which they would like to enter school and has been identified as a highly advanced gifted student by the District may enroll in kindergarten.
First Grade
Children who are six years old on or before October 1 of the school year in which they would like to enter school shall be admitted to first grade. A student who is at least five years old on or before October 1 may be permitted to enroll in first grade if the student attended at least 120 days of kindergarten in another state. A child who is five years old on or before October 1 of the school year in which they would like to enter school and has been identified as a highly advanced gifted student by the District may enroll in first grade.
A legal birth certificate or other acceptable record shall be required for enrollment age certification. The principal or designee will make exceptions to these entrance age requirements in accordance with state law pertaining to the education of military children.
State and federal laws are in place to enable children in foster care or who are determined to be homeless to enroll immediately without age verification documentation. Under the McKinney-Vento Homeless Education Act, the children of families who are considered homeless are eligible for immediate enrollment without age verification documentation.
